Cloud Migration to Microsoft Azure: A Practical Roadmap for Businesses
Moving to the cloud is no longer a question of if but when and how. For small and mid-sized businesses, Microsoft Azure offers an enterprise-grade platform with a pay-as-you-go model that levels the playing field. Yet a poorly planned migration can cost more than it saves. In this guide, we share the practical roadmap we use at Gigansoft when moving client workloads to Azure.
Why Migrate to Azure?
Azure is a natural fit for organisations that already rely on Microsoft technologies such as Windows Server, Active Directory and Microsoft 365. Key benefits include:
- Cost flexibility: replace capital expenditure on hardware with predictable operational costs.
- Scalability: scale compute and storage up or down in minutes as demand changes.
- Security and compliance: built-in tools such as Microsoft Defender for Cloud, encryption at rest and EU data residency options.
- Hybrid capability: keep sensitive workloads on-premises and connect them securely with Azure Arc, VPN Gateway or ExpressRoute.
Step 1: Assess Your Current Environment
Every successful migration starts with an honest inventory. Document your servers, applications, databases, dependencies and licensing. Tools such as Azure Migrate can scan your on-premises VMware or Hyper-V environment and produce readiness reports, right-sizing recommendations and monthly cost estimates before you move a single workload.
Step 2: Choose the Right Migration Strategy
Not every application should be migrated the same way. The most common strategies are:
- Rehost (lift and shift): move VMs as they are to Azure Virtual Machines. Fastest option, minimal code changes.
- Replatform: make small optimisations, for example moving databases to Azure SQL Managed Instance or file shares to Azure Files.
- Refactor: rebuild parts of the application for Azure App Service, containers or serverless functions to reduce long-term running costs.
- Retire or replace: some legacy systems are better replaced with SaaS alternatives.
Step 3: Plan Landing Zones and Networking
Before workloads arrive, prepare a secure foundation: subscriptions, resource groups, virtual networks, network security groups, identity with Microsoft Entra ID, and governance through Azure Policy. A well-designed landing zone prevents the “cloud sprawl” that drives up costs later.
Step 4: Migrate in Waves and Validate
Group applications into migration waves, starting with low-risk workloads such as test environments. For each wave: replicate, test in an isolated environment, cut over during a planned maintenance window, and validate performance and backups before decommissioning the source.
Step 5: Optimise After Migration
Migration is not the finish line. Review Azure Advisor recommendations, purchase reserved instances or savings plans for stable workloads, configure auto-shutdown for dev/test VMs, and set budgets with cost alerts. We typically see 20-35% cost reductions in the first optimisation cycle.
